Britt-Scripps House
This imposing 3 story, 6,270 square foot Queen Anne Victorian mansion, the Britt-Scripps House in San Diego, was built for Eugene Britt, a prominent attorney and judge, and his wife, Harriet, in 1887. Some sources report that, at the time, it was the most expensive home in San Diego at a cost of $3,000. The couple only resided in the mansion a few years before it was purchased by newspaper mogul and founder of United Press International, Edward W. Scripps, as a second home. The property exchanged hands several times over the last century and has been utilized for various businesses including law offices, a chiropractor’s office, a hotel, a bed and breakfast and event venue. It underwent a thorough renovation when repurposed as the Britt Scripps Inn in 2005. It is San Diego Historic Landmark No. 52.
