Anaheim High School, Anaheim
Like much in Anaheim, the history of Anaheim High School can be traced back practically to the founding of the city. Anaheim School District was formed in 1867. The first high school classes started in 1898. The citizens of Anaheim funded a bond measure in 1901 to buy the land for, build and equip a separate high school building. By 1912, a new Greek-revival Anaheim Union High School was dedicated and graduated its first class of 17 students. The Long Beach earthquake in 1933 irreparably damaged AUHS, requiring its demolition. Construction began on a new Art Deco administration building as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA) project #8291. The current main building, library and auditorium were completed and dedicated in 1936. At the time it was called the “finest building of its kind in Southern California” and the new pride of the community.
