Ennis House
The 6000 sq. ft. Ennis House overlooks Los Angeles from a 3-acre lot in the foothills of the Hollywood Hills in the Los Feliz area. The home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for Charles and Mabel Ennis in 1923 and was built in 1924 under the direction of Frank’s son, Lloyd. It is the fourth, last and largest of Wright’s textile block houses. The house is made of over 27,000 interlocking concrete blocks, each of which is individually cast and decorated. The ornamental detail of the concrete blocks and the organization of the house were designed to evoke a Maya palace. The Ennis House is a veritable Hollywood icon, with over 80 screen appearances, most notably “The House on Haunted Hill” and “Blade Runner” and the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a California Historical Landmark and Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
