Hill-Carrillo Adobe
The Hill-Carrillo Adobe occupies a place of many firsts in Santa Barbara history. It was built in 1826 by Daniel Hill for his bride Rafaela Luisa Ortega y Olivera, granddaughter of José Francisco Ortega, founder and first Comandante of the Royal Presidio of Santa Barbara. The first child to be born of two American parents in Santa Barbara, Isabel Larkin, was born here in 1833. The first City Council met here in 1850. In 1852 a daguerrotypist photographed the town’s elite on the front porch – some of the first photographs taken in Santa Barbara. It was even said to the first home with wooden floors. The name “Carrillo” dates from 1860 when the adobe was sold to Guillermo and Joaquin Carrillo, family members of Raimundo Carrillo, the third Comandante of the Presidio. It is a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
