University of California (2 of 3)

Landmark #500 Part 2 of 3 – the master plan developed by William Pereira for the UC Irvine campus included twelve buildings. Today we are featuring the Engineering Tower, Rowland Hall, the Social Science Tower and the Computer Science building. The 10-story Engineering Tower and shorter Computer Science building face each other across a plaza. The Engineering Tower houses the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering departments. The Computer Science building features something that Periera’s other buildings don’t: an open courtyard. Rowland Hall was named after one of UCI’s original faculty members and Nobel Prize winner F. Sherwood Rowland. The Social Science Tower, heart of the largest academic unit in the university, was featured in the film ‘Conquest of the Planet of the Apes’ in 1972.
