Victor Condo

It takes more than age for a building to be historic, according to members of Carlsbad’s Historic Preservation Commission. Architectural style also is important, said Commissioner Raul Diaz, during the group’s [January 2022] discussion of the Victor Condo. The property owner has proposed demolishing the colorful three-unit condominium building, constructed in the early 1980s next to Magee Park, to make way for a new, luxury three-condominium building. Nicknamed for its Victorian-style facade, the Victor Condo building was the first work in the “Blendo” style created by San Diego architects Ted Smith and Kathleen McCormick. The distinctive post-modern look started a Southern California trend by combining elements of diverse structures within the nearby neighborhood. The city Planning Department postponed the request to obtain additional information.
