Pío Pico Casa
The adobe home of the last governor of Mexican California, Don Pio Pico, stands on the grounds of Pio Pico State Historic Park in Whittier. The five acre park was once part of Pico’s 9,000 acre ranch, Rancho Paso de Bartolo. El Ranchito, as Pico called it, was built to replace a smaller adobe home that was destroyed by the floods of 1883-1884. This second 15-room home is a rambling affair, some 98 feet long and built in a U-shape around a patio. Its design represents a compromise of American and Mexican architecture with shingles on the gabled room and dormer windows in the attic. Other features in the park include historic gardens, an horno (bread oven) and a dovecote. It is a California Historical Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
