Carthay Circle

Since 2001, architectural photographer John Bare has documented numerous historic residential districts throughout Southern California. Today SoCal Landmarks is presenting selections from the Carthay Circle area of Los Angeles. While some of the homes and buildings may be noteworthy on their own, the goal of John’s documentation, and our presentations, is to provide an overview of the districts and the variety of architectural styles that contribute to their notoriety. J. Harvey McCarthy developed Carthay Circle, originally called Carthay Center, between 1922 and 1944. Carthay Circle was the first subdivision in Los Angeles to be planned with underground utilities, maintaining the streetscape free of the clutter of telephone poles and electric wires. Architectural styles include Spanish Colonial Revival, Tudor, French and American Colonial Revival. The Carthay Circle Historic Preservation Overlay Zone was adopted in 1998.
