Minnie Palmer Residence

The Minnie Palmer Residence in Chatsworth, also known as The Homestead Acre, is the only remaining homestead cottage in the San Fernando Valley. In 1886, under the Homestead Act, James and Rhonda Hill settled on 110 acres of land in what is now Chatsworth. Their seventh child, Minnie, was born later in that same year. The Hill family built the surviving three-bedroom bungalow between 1911 and 1913 after the original homestead was torn down. Minnie married Alfred Palmer in 1908 and moved elsewhere. The Palmers returned to Chatsworth in 1920 when Minnie’s mother became ill. She continued to live there until age 90, raising vegetables, canning fruit and living in the pioneer style. The house is now maintained by the Chatsworth Historical Society. It is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
