Helms Bakery District

On March 2, 1931, Paul Helms opened the Helms Bakery on the border of Los Angeles and Culver City with 32 employees and 11 delivery coaches. By the next year, Helms had become the “official baker” of the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. The handsome Art Deco building facing Venice Blvd fronted an 11-acre factory complex that produced, packaged and truck-loaded bread, pastries, donuts, cookies and candies for “daily at your door” delivery. The family continued to operate the bakery for 12 years after Helms died in 1957. Walter N. Marks, Inc. purchased the entire property in the early 1970s to create a mixed-use facility with home furnishing designer showrooms, retail stores, arts-related enterprises and restaurants. Culver City awarded the original Helms Bakery building landmark status in 1997.
