Rómulo Pico Adobe, Mission Hills, Los Angeles County

Rómulo Pico Adobe

Rómulo Pico Adobe in Mission Hills, also referred to as Andrés Pico Adobe, grew from a one-room structure, now the sala, built in 1834. It was likely part of the San Fernando Mission complex. In 1845, Andres Pico and Juan Manso were granted a nine-year lease for the San Fernando Valley. Pico ran cattle on his Valley ranch and made the Mission his rancho home. Sometime between 1846 and 1860, the dining room and library were added. It is unclear that Andres ever lived in the adobe, but in 1874, Catarina and Rómulo Pico, adopted children of Andres, married and moved in. They expanded the adobe with a kitchen, two wings and the second floor. The adobe is the oldest residence in the San Fernando Valley and second oldest in the City of Los Angeles. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, a California Historical Landmark and a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
