Rancho de los Quiotes
Rancho de los Quiotes, the Leo Carrillo Ranch in Carlsbad, was built between 1937 and 1940 by actor Leo Carrillo as a retreat and working ranch in the style of Spanish hacienda estates. Carillo was a 7th generation Californio, a descendant of one of the original 12 families of San Diego. While well known as an actor on stage and screen, most notably in the TV series “Cisco Kid,” Carrillo was a staunch advocate for preservation as a member of the California Beaches and Parks Commission, earning him the title “Mr. California.” Of the original 2,538 acres of the ranch, most were sold to developers. 10.5 acres containing the historic structures were deeded to the City of Carlsbad to which the city added 16.4 acres to create the Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park. It is a California Historical Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places.
