Earthquake Garden, CSUN
The Lauretta Wasserstein Earthquake Sculpture Garden, or simply the Earthquake Garden, is on the campus of Cal State University Northridge. Artist Marjorie Berkson Sievers conceived the design and worked with landscape architect Paul Lewis to weave native grasses and other plants into pieces of Parking Structure C that imploded during the 6.7-magnitude quake on January 17, 1994. The actual epicenter was only about a mile away. The campus experienced catastrophic damage to the majority of the buildings. Besides the parking structure, the University Tower apartments, the east and west wings of the Oviatt Library, the South Library and Fine Arts building were all demolished. Of these structures, only the wings of the Oviatt Library were reconstructed.
