Kundert Medical Building
The Kundert Medical Building in San Luis Obispo is one of the few commercial buildings as well as one of the last designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Dr. Karl Kundert and his tenant, Dr. Fogo, were both ophthalmologists from Wisconsin and were familiar with Wright’s work. Kundert originally approached Wright in 1953 to design a building for him. Wright was not really interested in designing the building, but Kundert was persistent, traveling to meet Wright numerous times. Supposedly, photos of the site with sprawling Sycamore trees along the bank of the creek that ran through the property changed Wright’s mind. Construction of the building was supervised by Wright protégé, Aaron Green, and completed in 1956.
