Wilshire Boulevard Temple, Los Angeles, Los Angeles County

Wilshire Boulevard Temple

`The oldest Jewish congregation in Los Angeles, Congregation B’nai B’rith, was founded in 1862. The congregation purchased property for its third Temple at the corner of Wilshire and Hobart Boulevards in 1921. It was dedicated in a three-day ceremony in June, 1929. The octagonal building was designed by A. M. Adelman, S. Tilden Norton, and David C. Allison and built for a then-princely sum of $1.4 million. The Warner brothers, Irving Thalberg, Carl Laemmle and Louis B. Mayer all made notable decorative donations. Intentionally designed to be in dialogue with the Temple’s historic Byzantine-Revival sanctuary, the Audrey Irmas Pavilion is located next to the Temple on Wilshire Blvd. The Temple is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
