Christiansen and Grow Filling Station, Orange, Orange County

Christiansen and Grow Filling Station

This singular building, originally the Christiansen and Grow Filling Station, at the corner of Main and Palmyra in Orange, was built circa 1928 along State Highway 101 which connected Los Angeles with San Diego. It is the oldest remaining gas station in Orange and one of only four pre-1930s stations in Orange County. The distinctive, sweeping gabled roof, which sheltered the gas bays, makes the building unique in the county. It became a Mobil gas station, owned by Don Clark from 1953 to 1988. The station closed and the building was used by various retail businesses. In 2021, Preserve Orange County commissioned Architectural Resources Group to prepare a nomination to the National Register of Historic Places. On December 28, 2021, the property was officially determined eligible for listing and was added to the California Register of Historical Resources. On February 15, 2024, a new business celebrated its grand opening to give the station new life.
