The Maze Stone, Hemet, Riverside County

The Maze Stone

Although the original creators are unknown, this Maze Stone in Hemet is considered a prehistoric petroglyph and a historic landmark. Suggested creators range from Native Americans to Chinese sailors. Protected from vandals today with a dual chain-link fence, the “maze” was discovered in 1914 by the owner of the land while exploring his property. The stone and surrounding land was ultimately donated to Riverside County in 1956 by owners Mr & Mrs Rodger Miller. The inscribed “Swastika” in the lower left corner of the maze is not original but was the result of vandals – as earlier photographs show no such inscription. The maze is a California Historical Landmark.
