First Congregational Church
The First Congregational Church, founded in 1872, is recognized as the first organized church in Riverside. In 1887, the Congregationalists moved to the site of their present location and constructed a wooden Gothic-style church. In 1912 the cornerstone was laid for the present church building. The building is a brick structure with a concrete tower. It was designed by Myron Hunt, a leading California architect who also designed the Spanish Wing of the Mission Inn and the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. Henry Jekel was the architectural engineer for the Spanish Baroque Churrigueresque Tower. It is recognized as one of the most significant Spanish Revival structures in Southern California. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a City of Riverside Cultural Heritage Landmark.
