Roberts Cottages
A.J. Clark purchased the unimproved 700 block of North Strand in Oceanside in 1925 and in January 1928, secured a permit to build 24 beach cottages for a projected cost of $25,000. The cottages, completed in July 1928, were designed and built by the Whiting-Mead Company. Harry and Virginia Roberts bought the cottages in January 1941. Roberts Cottages, the only surviving beachfront auto court in Oceanside, represents an important part of the city’s early tourism industry as a destination on motor Route 101. The cottages were also in walking distance of the railroad which attracted many part-time residents from Los Angeles. Today many of them are still owned individually, several are rented out for vacation rentals.
