Cinerama Dome, Hollywood, Los Angeles County

Cinerama Dome

In February 1963, Cinerama Inc. unveiled a radically new design for theaters to show movies filmed with its new widescreen process. Pacific Theatres founder William R. Forman announced the construction of the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood in July 1963. Working around the clock, the entire construction took only 16 weeks. The Cinerama Dome is the only concrete geodesic dome in the world, made up of 316 individual hexagonal and pentagonal shapes in 16 different sizes. At the time of its opening, it had the largest contoured motion picture screen in the world, measuring 32 feet high and 86 feet wide. Besides being a renowned film premiere location, the Dome has appeared in many movies and TV shows. It was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1998.
