Hollyhock House at Barnsdall Art Park
Oil heiress Aline Barnsdall bought 35 acres on the crest of Olive Hill in East Hollywood to develop an innovative theatrical community. She commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright for his first Los Angeles project to design and build a home for Barnsdall and her daughter, a theater, a director’s house, studios for artists and more. He named the residence Hollyhock House after Barnsdall’s favorite flower. Construction began in 1919 continuing until she fired Wright in 1921. Barnsdall gifted the Art Park to the City of Los Angeles in 1927. Barnsdall Art Park is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Landmark and National Historic Landmark. Hollyhock House is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both are on the National Register of Historic Places.
