United States Rabbit Experimental Station
This rather nondescript building in Fontana had the unique distinction of being the first and only federal government facility in the U.S. for the study of breeding and raising rabbits. It opened in 1928 on land donated by city founder A. B. Miller and was operated by the Dept of Agriculture. In the 1920s rabbits were considered the new meat industry in California and supplied valuable pelts and fertilizer by-products. Under the guidance of Dr. Geo Templeton, the operation was successful in nearly doubling the litter production to a peak of over 4,000 rabbits. It remained in operation until 1965 when it was bought by the city for other purposes. It is a California Historical Landmark.
