Del Mar Race Track
In 1936, William Quigley and Bing Crosby filed for articles of incorporation for the Del Mar Turf Club. Its board included actors Pat O’Brien, Gary Cooper, Joe E. Brown, and Oliver Hardy. They negotiated a ten-year lease that required them to build a grandstand, barn, stalls, paddock, jockey quarters, and offices. Architects Hamill and Jackson built the Del Mar fairgrounds and track in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. Opened in July, 1937, the Del Mar Race Track is the 2nd largest horse racing venue in the western United States. The racing season lasts from July-September, with another meet in November each year.
