The Pilgrim, 1 year later
The Pilgrim, Dana Point’s iconic tall ship, sank in its slip at the Ocean Institute March 29, 2020 (http://bit.ly/36g0ifi). The US Coast Guard halted the subsequent inspection operation when crews heard loud cracking as it was lifted by a crane and deemed the plan unsafe. The demolition and removal process started on April 7. A week-long auction of about 50 salvaged items including the figurehead, wheel, anchor light, cannon and ship parts including belay pins, the binnacle compass, hatch covers, staircases and the port, starboard and stern nameplates took place in mid-June. Ocean Institute team members also salvaged select items for future display.
