Adobe de Palomares
In 1837, Mexican Governor Juan B. Alvarado granted a 22,000-acre tract of land, the Rancho San Jose, to Don Ygnacio Palomares and Don Ricardo Vejar in what was then most of eastern Pomona Valley. Palomares soon built what is credited as the first structure in the valley and, by 1854, his second home, known as Adobe de Palomares. By the 1880s the home fell is disrepair and sat idle until the City of Pomona purchased the land and home in 1939. The home was restored and opened to visitors as a museum. The Adobe is a California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
