Rose Bowl

Nestled in the Arroyo Seco on the west side of Pasadena, the Rose Bowl hosts “the granddaddy of them all”- the annual New Year’s Day Tournament of Roses, or more popularly, Rose Bowl Game. Designed by noted Pasadena architect Myron Hunt, the stadium was built by the Tournament of Roses Association in 1922 and presented to the City of Pasadena. The concrete structure is plain architecturally, built on a purely elliptical plan. It measures 880 feet from its north to south rim, 695 feet from the east to west rim. It is surrounded by a fence one mile in circumference. Except for 1942, when the game was held at Duke because of wartime defense considerations, and 2021 due to COVID restrictions, the Tournament of Roses Game has been held annually in this stadium since 1923, the first year it was available. It is a National Historic Landmark and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
