Sunset Tower
Architect Leland Bryant specialized in luxury apartments, but the Sunset Tower in West Hollywood was his crowning achievement. According to architectural historian Roger G. Hatheway, it is perhaps the best example of large scale apartment Art Deco/Zig Zag Moderne architecture in the Los Angeles area. Designed in 1929, it opened in 1931 as a luxury apartment hotel; one of the first high-rise reinforced concrete buildings in California. There were modern conveniences, like outlets in every bathroom for electric shavers and the windows were made larger to take advantage of the spectacular views. It counted among its residents Howard Hughes, John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe, Errol Flynn, Elizabeth Taylor and Frank Sinatra. Sunset Tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
