The Whisky a Go Go

The Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, the first live music venue inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, was founded by Mario Maglieri, Elmer Valentine and Phil Tanzini. It opened on January 16, 1964, with a live band led by Johnny Rivers and DJ Joanie Labine. The Whisky had to spell its name without the ‘e’ because Los Angeles city zoning laws didn’t allow any club to be named after alcohols.
