UCSD Geisel Library
UC San Diego’s Central University Library building (or simply Central Library) opened in 1970. The eight story, concrete structure, sited at the head of a canyon near the center of the campus, was designed by renowned architect William Pereira as the focal point of a master plan for the University Center. It was rededicated as the University Library Building after a renovation was completed in 1993. Long-time La Jolla residents Audrey and Theodor Seuss Geisel had been advocates for improving literacy and were generous donors to the library. This included a collection of about 8,500 items of Seuss’s creative acheivements with original drawings, sketches, proofs, notebooks, manuscript drafts, books, audio and videotapes, photographs and memorabilia. The University acknowledged the donations by renaming it Geisel Library in 1995.
