Montanez Adobe

The Montanez Adobe on Los Rios Street in San Juan Capistrano is one of the oldest buildings in the city. Built in 1794, it was one of 40 adobes built for “married couples, Juanenos, artisans and soldiers from the Mission.” It was named for Polonia Montanez, the owner of record in 1850, who was a village midwife and gave religious instruction to children during a period when the Mission was inactive. It is now a museum owned by the City. The adobe is listed on the National Register of Historic Places both individually and as a contributing structurs of the Los Rios Historic District.
