Bunnyhenge, Civic Center Park, Newport Beach, Orange County

Bunnyhenge

Civic Center Park in Newport Beach turned nearly half a million square feet of undeveloped land into a new public park. It was designed by the Berkeley landscape architectural firm Peter Walker and Partners (PWP Landscape Architecture). The design included 16 much larger-than-life white stone rabbits, a product of thinking “outside the playground” inspired by Alice in Wonderland. 14 of the bunnies, each about 3′ (1 m) tall, sit in a circle at the north end of the park. The designers aimed to provide intrigue and discovery in the public space, but stirred up considerable controversy with a $221,000 price tag. Unlike the other sculptures in the rotating temporary art exhibit, Bunnyhenge has delighted visitors since it was unveiled in 2013.
