A Photography Project
Designed by architects William Allen and W. George Lutzi in the WPA Moderne style, ground was broken on Burbank City Hall in February 1941. Construction was completed in 1943. It was one of the last SoCal projects in that style.

In 1926, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway replaced the wooden depot built in 1886 in Monrovia with a station designed by William H. Mohr, chief architect for the Santa Fe’s Coast Lines, in the Spanish Colonial Revival style.

Old City Hall, as many call it now, was the third, and last, city government building at 3rd and Main in Santa Ana. It was built in 1935 after the existing building was deemed unsafe due to damage from the 1933 Long Beach earthquake.

The home of National City’s founder, Frank Kimball and wife Sara, was a lavish house of its time and is the oldest existing building in the South Bay. It has been moved and altered, but remains mostly intact, serving as a local museum.

Frank Kimball purportedly bought the land and built Brick Row, later called the Kimball Block, in 1887-88 to provide housing for officials of the railroad, the Texas & Pacific, which he tried so desperately to bring to National City.

This 11-room, Queen Anne style house in Escondido, built for Julius H. Anderson in 1891, was designed by the architectural firm of Comstock and Trotsche. It is called Bandy House for Tom Bandy who lived there for just over 50 years.

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in National City was built in 1887. There is some disagreement as to who is the architect of the structure, but the design was said to be inspired by a picture of a small church in the south of England.
