Maywood City Hall
Maywood, one of the smallest cities in Los Angeles County (by area), was incorporated in 1924. In June, 1938, the city celebrated “[a]mid the blare of trumpets and the waving of flags” the dedication of its new, two-story city hall. The Art Deco/Moderne style building, designed by engineer E. R. Edwards, brought together “a fire station, police station and jail, city hall offices and an auditorium [to] be used by local organizations and the citizenry for public meetings.” As remarkable as its design is the fact that cost of the $25,000 project (at the end of the Depression) was paid in “cash” from funds “saved by the council from the general fund.” Early photos show that the fire station occupied what is now the middle section of the building occupied by the LA Sherriff. The offices to the left of that section were added at a later date.
