Upland City Hall

The former City Hall on D Street in Upland was built in 1939. The Art Deco/Moderne style building was designed by the prolific Los Angeles architectural firm of Walker and Eisen (Oviatt Building, Los Angeles; El Cortez Hotel, San Diego). The building served as City Hall and Police Department until 1969. The Scheu Companies grew from a manufacturing company founded by Leland and Allyn Sheu in 1930. The brothers partnered in steel, citrus farming and commercial real estate companies. The company is considered by some as the “savior of ranchers all over Southern California” as the original manufacturer of orchard heaters, the so-called “smudge pots.” Scheu Management Corporation and Scheu Manufacturing list the former city hall as the company’s location although the timeline of the company’s history in the building is not clear.
