Irvine Civic Center
When the Irvine Company worked with architect William Pereira to develop a master plan for their ‘Totally Planned Community’ in 1959-60, University Town Center, as Pereira called it, was to be the site for city hall. The City of Irvine was incorporated at the end of 1971, but it wasn’t until 1976 that construction began on an interim civic center and 1984 when the City Council settled on the Westpark site for a permanent one. Construction began in June 1987; it was dedicated on April 23, 1989. The complex was designed by Klages Carter Vail & Partners/CRS Sirrine Inc. for which they received awards at both county and state levels. Irvine Civic Center encompasses Irvine City Hall and Council Chamber, a small Conference and Training Center and the Irvine Police Department. The buildings surround a 20,000 sq. ft. piazza used for public and private events.
