Residential Historic Districts
Since 2001, architectural photographer John Bare has documented numerous historic residential districts throughout Southern California. Today SoCal Landmarks is presenting selections from the historic residential areas of Pomona that include Lincoln Park, Wilton Heights and Hacienda Park. While some of the homes and buildings may be noteworthy on their own, the goal of John’s documentation, and our presentations, is to provide an overview of the districts and the variety of architectural styles that contribute to their distinction.
The City of Pomona adopted its historic preservation ordinance in 1988 and completed its first citywide survey of historic resources in 1993. There are five historic districts, three of which are residential areas. The Lincoln Park Historic District, designated on May 4, 1998, was Pomona’s first residential neighborhood designated as a local historic district and remains the largest. The district takes its name from the City’s Lincoln Park, built in 1910, and located at the center of the District. The Wilton Heights Historic District was designated on August 2, 1999. Wilton Heights has the most eclectic group of architectural styles of the historic districts. The Hacienda Park Historic District was designated on October 6, 2003, as Pomona’s fourth Historic District. The homes in Hacienda Park span nearly 100 years of Pomona’s History.
