Hillview Apartments

The Hillview Apartments, built on Hollywood Boulevard in 1917, were one of several apartments and hotels built for the convenience of a highly transient film industry population and one of the few that would rent to aspiring actors. Jesse L. Lasky, co-founder of Paramount Pictures, and his brother-in-law Samuel Goldwyn, co-founder of MGM, were the driving force behind the construction of the apartments. It quickly became a Hollywood hotspot. The vast basement housed a rehearsal space until Rudolph Valentino reportedly converted it to a speakeasy. Charlie Chaplin was once a proprietor of the Hillview. In October 2021, The Hillview was purchased, restored and updated, and renamed The Harlan Residences. Hillview Apartments is a contributing structure in the Hollywood Boulevard Commercial and Entertainment District on the National Register of Historic Places.
