Heartwell-Lowe House
The Colonial Revival style Heartwell-Lowe House was built in the Bluff Park area of Long Beach in 1919. The two story, 2,366 square foot house was the home of Colonel Charles L. Heartwell, who came to Long Beach in 1896 and played a leading role in the financial and civic development of the City. In 1898, Heartwell married LaVerne Lowe, daughter of Belle Lowe, who is credited with giving Long Beach its name. Heartwell helped organize the First National Bank and served as city treasurer from 1899 to 1908. For a time, he was in charge of the local Department of Motor Vehicles and, late in his life, ran the Long Beach Water Department. His title of colonel came in 1907 when he was commissioned a lieutenant colonel in the California National Guard. The Heartwell-Lowe House is a City of Long Beach Historic Landmark.
