Tramway Gas Station, Palm Springs, Riverside County

Tramway Gas Station

The Tramway Gas Station is located at the northwest entrance to Palm Springs on Highway 111 at Tramway Road. Architects Albert Frey and Robson Chambers, who designed and built the station in 1965, called its soaring, wing-like roof a “hyperbolic paraboloid.” The property was initially a gasoline service station for the Humble Oil Company (Enco/Exxon). It served that purpose as Express Gas, A & D Service and Tramway Texaco until it was closed in the mid-1990s. It was saved from demolition when it was purchased by a private interest in 1999. The building was rehabilitated in consultation with Frey and the interior was gutted for use as a sculpture gallery. It became the Palm Springs Visitor Center a few years later. The Tramway Gas Station is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
