West Los Angeles Street Car Depot
Dating to 1893, the Streetcar Depot (Building No. 66) near the corner of Pershing and Dewey Avenues in West Los Angeles was on the grounds of the Sawtelle Veterans Home. The wood frame building, designed by the architects Peters and Bums, originally stood a few blocks away, near the end of the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Soldier’s Home branch line. The nearby trolley line tracks were removed around 1929 and the building was used as a newspaper stand and then a refreshment stand for decades. This building is the lone survivor of the 16-post passenger structures built by Southern Pacific around the Veterans Center. The Streetcar Depot served the veteran residents, administrative and operations staff and the general public in its original capacity as a transportation terminal for over four decades. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
