Stoney Point
Stoney Point is only the most recent name for a prominent sandstone outcropping of the Chatsworth Formation and surrounding area in the northwest corner of the San Fernando Valley. Stoney Point is generally accepted as the site of the Tongva village Momonga. With the establishment of Mission San Fernando, it became Ranchería de las Piedras (“Village of the Stones”). Other names include Castle Rock, Sugar Loaf Hill, Rocky Point and Stony Point Rancho. The City of Los Angeles established the 22-acre Stoney Point Park in 1982 which has since expanded to 76 acres. Since the 1930s, Stoney Point has attracted rock climbers from beginners to “legends” like Royal Robbins, Yvon Chouinard, Bob Kamps and John Long. It has appeared periodically in film and on TV since 1916. Stoney Point was designated a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument in 1974.
