Lewis House
Lewis House is a 3-story, 5-bedroom, 4,559 sq. ft. residence in what was once the Crown Hill area of Los Angeles. It was designed by Joseph Cather Newsom and built in 1890 for Samuel J. and Mary Agnes Lewis. Capt. Lewis had settled in Madison WI after the Civil War, married Mary Agnes Witmer and joined her brothers, Henry Clayton and Joseph Myer Witmer in local business enterprises. They all pulled up stakes to move to the Los Angeles area and capitalize on the late 19th century boom there. They bought 650 acres of empty land west of Bunker Hill, naming it Crown Hill, and saw early development success. They championed the 2nd Street Cable Railway which traveled over a deep cut in Bunker Hill to the Crown Hill area. The Witmer brothers also formed and ran the California Bank for which Samuel served in various positions, eventually becoming President. It is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
