Encinitas Station

The Encinitas Santa Fe Railroad Station is almost universally described as a gingerbread-Victorian style building. It was built in 1887 during the push to connect San Diego with parts north by rail. Passenger service continued into the 1950s and freight service continued until the station closed in January 1969. One source indicates that moving it to Del Mar Fairgrounds was proposed in 1971, but in 1972 an entrepreneur bought the station, reportedly for $1, and moved it to Leucadia to open “The Station,” a crafts/hobby center. In 1980, Pannikin Coffee and Tea took over the location and restored the building. Further renovations in 2010 replaced the roof. It has become a community landmark as illustrated by one customer’s comment, “There’s no better place to stop and meet friends and relax…”
