Home Savings and Loan, Westminster, Orange County

Home Savings and Loan

The former Home Savings and Loan Bank (now Chase Bank) at Bolsa Avenue and Goldenwest Street, made almost inaccessible between the Westminster Mall access roads and the I405 interchange entrances and exits, was built at about the same time as the mall in the latter 1970s. It is a generally solid, rectangular building except for the recessed entry that appears to make the forest-scene mosaic seemingly float above it. This was the last Home Savings and Loan Bank building in Orange County to be designed by the renowned Millard Sheets. According to Sheets expert Adam Arenson, it is one of “late” murals created near the date Millard Sheets turned over these commissions completely to Susan Hertel and Denis O’Connor. It shows Sue’s styling — flowing lines, organic motifs, family groupings, beautiful abstract trees, contrasting colors – as well as her initials!
