Monrovia High School
The cornerstone of the current Monrovia High School was laid in April of 1928. John C. Austin and Frederic M. Ashley of Los Angeles, associated with the Shrine Auditorium, Griffith Observatory and Los Angeles City Hall, were the principal architects. The school was built in response to a growing student population following the expansion of the Monrovia City High School District in 1920 with the addition of Duarte in July and Arcadia in November. A successful bond election in 1927 made the purchase of the present campus at Colorado and Madison and the construction of the original six buildings on the campus possible. The buildings have undergone renovation in the mid 1950s and 2000s. There has been a local movement to landmark the high school buildings for practically every reason historic buildings are recognized at local, state and national levels.
