Lanterman House
The Lanterman House in what is now La Cañada Flintridge was built on the lands of the 5,830-acre Rancho La Canada, purchased in 1875 by Dr. Jacob Lanterman and his partner Colonel Adolphous Williams. Jacob and his wife Ammoretta, their three children and four grandchildren developed the valley economically and socially. For its time, the Lanterman House, commissioned in 1915 by Dr. Roy Lanterman and built by A. L. Haley, was unique in its design and construction, built in a California Craftsman style using reinforced concrete throughout the main floor and basement for its resistance to fire and strength against earthquakes. The use of wood, stone and stucco offsets the cold, severe appearance of the concrete. Roy’s sons, Frank and Lloyd, lived there until their deaths in 1981 and 1987 respectively. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
