D.D. Johnston-Hargitt House
The D.D. Johnston-Hargitt House in Norwalk is a two-story Eastlake style Victorian house built in 1890-91. Originally the Johnston property consisted of 120 acres devoted to wine grapes. During Prohibition, the ranch began raising prunes, avocados and citrus. Darius David Johnston was one of Norwalk’s leading pioneers. He was instrumental in organizing the Norwalk School District in 1860s and was a member of the school board of directors of until his death in 1917. Johnston was an humanitarian who helped the Japanese find employment, housing and schooling when they immigrated to the area in the I880s. He and his family, through his daughter, Cora Hargitt, a teacher and principal in the school system, and grandson, Charles Hargitt, continued to support the civic welfare of the Norwalk community. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
