Goleta Depot, Goleta, Santa Barbara County

Goleta Depot

Scores of two-story, wood-frame depots based on the Southern Pacific Railroad Co. “Combination Station No. 22” plan were built by the railroad from about 1890 well into the early decades of the 20th century. The Goleta Depot, built in 1901, was one of about a dozen depots built by the railroad in Santa Barbara County at the time of the completion of SP’s Coast Line connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles. The station was closed in 1973 and would have been demolished were it not for a lawsuit over the depot property. Resolution of the lawsuit called for removal of the depot and it was offered to Goleta Beautiful, a community organization. Ultimately, the depot was moved in 1981 to Los Carneros County Park, a largely undeveloped park occupying part of the historic Stow Ranch lands. Goleta Depot is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
