Millard Sheets mural "Pleasures Along the Beach", Orange, Orange County

“Pleasures Along the Beach”

Several Home Savings buildings (now Chase Bank branches) in Orange County have mosaic murals created by Millard Sheets gracing their entrances. So did the Home Savings in Santa Monica. Sheets created the mural “Pleasures Along the Beach” in 1969. In 2019, with the building facing demolition, the mural was painstakingly removed, in sections, and crated up. A sequence of almost serendipitous events brought Millard’s son, Tony Sheets, Mark Hilbert, founder of the Hilbert Museum of California Art in Orange, and Brian Worley, who had worked on the mosaic originally, together to move the mural to Orange County for installation on the new Hilbert Museum two-building ensemble that celebrated its grand opening on February 23, 2024.
