Beverly Wilshire Hotel
The Beverly Wilshire Hotel occupies an entire block on the south side of Wilshire Boulevard at the south end of the Rodeo Drive shopping area in Beverly Hills. The real estate development firm of Walter G. McCarty Corp. erected the hotel on a portion of the former Beverly Hills Speedway site. Initially named Beverly Wilshire Apartment Hotel, the 9-story structure was designed by the eminent Southern California architectural firm of Walker and Eisen in the Second Renaissance Revival style. Construction was completed in 1928. In the 1940s the hotel was sold to developers and renamed the Beverly Wilshire. The new owners commissioned Paul R. Williams to design extensive renovations that would add a grand ballroom, the Copa nightclub, an Olympic-sized swimming pool and tennis courts. The Beverly Wilshire is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
